H.L Night Interview

  1. What made you choose the God you did?

I have to say that I joined quite late and at that point all of the more well-known Gods were already taken (some people then dropped out.) During my research to pick a God, I was looking for 2 things—a name that could pass as fairly normal (I actually teach a Shay) and a characteristic that was fairly open as I didn’t at that point know what I was going to write.

  1. What do you know about that God?

Shai was the ancient Egyptian God of fate and destiny. He was thought to control the life span of a human being, which I thought was an interesting concept.  He was depicted as a man, a cobra or a man snake, hence why he is so into snakes in my book. The Egyptians believed that he followed a person from the moment of birth through to the judgement in the afterlife. His presence at the weighing of the heart could be either one of helping or hindering the deceased, or even as an unbiased party telling the court what has happened in the life of the deceased. I really liked the ambiguity of this.

  1. Which other God (if any) did you consider and why?

I can’t remember which God it was, but one of them is associated with surgery and I thought that might be interesting to play around with. That’s probably why a bit of surgery (spoiler alert) crept into my book.

  1. Since this series goes to the dark side of MM, what attracts you about this genre?

I’ve been wanting to write a dark book for quite some time. Due to the fact that I read an awful lot of dark books, I actually thought my writing would be a lot darker when I started. It did stray darker over time, but I still had to hold back on a few things. So this was a perfect opportunity to stop holding back. There’s actually a scene with Shai’s mother near the beginning of the book where the ‘oh, you can’t have that happen’ kicked in, and it was quite freeing to be able to think, oh, yes, I can. If you’ve read it, you’ll know exactly which bit I mean.

  1. What made you want to get involved in this series?

I thought it was an interesting concept and a perfect opportunity to finally use that darker pen name that I came up with ages ago. I’ve also never done a shared project with other authors and I’m a great believer in trying everything once (as long as it’s legal – I’m not Shai.)

  1. How did you decide if it will be a HEA or not?

I’m not sure I could write a book that didn’t have at least a HFN. Although, whether you think Shai has a HEA or not is very much down to the reader’s perception. You can let me know what you think.

      7. Are you done with the story? Or will it have a continuation?

I actually have a fully-formed idea for a sequel in my head that I’m fighting the urge to write. The characters keep demanding it, though, so I’ll probably have to give in to it at some point.

  1. What’s a secret that you can share about your story?

I was surprised by the body count when I actually worked it out, and by who had the biggest number to their name.
