- What was your first impression of the other character?
Shai: What was my first impression of Elijah? Well, given that he was almost dead, it wasn’t that complimentary. *Shai shrugs* Nothing else I can say really.
Elijah: Dangerous. And not just because of that damn snake round his neck. I mean, who walks around with a cobra around their neck? All I wanted to do was get the fuck out of there.
- If you had to compare the other person to an animal, which animal would it be and why?
Elijah: Well, that’s obvious, isn’t it? It would be a snake. He shares a lot of the same characteristics. You have to keep your eye on them as well, because you never quite know when they’re going to strike.
Shai: *smiles* Hmm… that’s an interesting question. What sort of animal insists on being stubborn even when it doesn’t benefit them? Maybe, a feral cat. Yes, that fits—all teeth and claws, but is happy to curl up once you’ve tamed them.
- Do you have any regrets? If so, what?
Shai: Regret is for people who haven’t taken the time to plan things carefully. I know exactly how things are going to work out. Therefore, I never have any cause to regret anything.
Elijah: *thinks hard* I guess if I was going to change anything, it would be the decision I made to come to Deadwood. But then if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be the man I am today.
- What do you fear the most?
Shai: Fear is for the weak, and I’m not a weak man.
Elijah: I used to be scared of lots of things. Now… I don’t know. I’ve changed a lot. I’d have to think about that. I’d like to say that I’m not scared of anything anymore.
- What makes you happy?
Elijah: I like to read history books. I get a lot more time to read now, so that’s good. Although, Shai doesn’t like it so much. He’d prefer it if I focus ALL of my attention on him.
Shai: What makes me happy? The usual things, seeing justice done, spending time with my snakes, the look on the face of the men when they realize what a huge mistake they have made and that they’re not as clever as they think they are. Oh, and success. I have a huge hard on for getting what I want.
- If you had to compare yourself to food? What would you choose and why?
Shai: Something rich or decadent—maybe a chocolate cake or a very good wine.
Elijah: Food? I don’t know. I’m quite uncomplicated. Something simple. Definitely not something fancy.
- How do you deal with it if someone crosses you?
Shai: I do whatever is necessary.
Elijah: No comment.
- What do you want written on your gravestone?
Elijah: He survived where others couldn’t.
Shai: Until next time.
